Web Design Inspiration Series: Michael Locke

Web Design Inspiration Series: Michael Locke

We all need a little motivation to keep us going. Whether it’s with exercise, with work or even spiritually, we all need motivation.  It’s no different when it comes to the world of freelance web design. Freelance web designers often work alone. The creative side and the business side starts and ends with just one person—you or me.

In this blog, I want to focus on the business side of freelance web design because that is what needs constant motivation. The creative side of web design looks more for inspiration, but the business side leans more toward motivation so that you can keep doing what you love to do.

This motivation at times needs to come from a special person. I’m not talking about family and friends who cheer you on just because you’re you. I’m talking about getting motivation from someone who understands how you feel and will motivate you to keep pushing forward because they are web designers too, and have been through the same highs and lows we often experience in this field.

For me, this motivation often comes from one person, Michael Locke, a UI/UX designer who lives in California. Michael has worked for big companies like Yahoo!, CBS, and FOX. But he also runs his own successful web design company, ML Web Consulting, Inc.

He has an online web design training website(www.mlwebco.com), which I am enrolled, and a bunch of videos on YouTube aimed at helping web designers get better at their craft. Over the past few years, however, he has started posting videos about the business side of web design. His experience and success gives him the credibility needed to tackle a variety of topics that web designers like me frequently deal with.

More than that is his demeanor and the delivery of his message, which has earned him over 42,000 subscribers on YouTube with over 4.7 million views. Videos like “Web Designer Career Outlook (The Web Designer's Journey),” “Real Web Designers Ship” and “Discouraged about your Web Design Career?” are just a few of the videos he’s posted to keep us motivated to keep designing, keep educating ourselves, keep growing and keep “shipping”.

So if you’re young or old, experienced or completely new to web design, if you haven’t done so already, subscribe and watch his videos. There is so much to gain.

Thanks Mike and keep “shipping!”
